From our desks at The Baker County Press... important (or at least entertaining) stuff you need to know

Here’s what’s happening around town this week — minus the long meetings, confusing budgets, and "What's that smoke from" as you're driving near the FL/GA line.

☝️ On the Pulse

🗞️ The county budget is… trying to do the most.

Commissioners approved a mid-year budget update that basically says: we’re dipping into savings to keep things running.

The county is pulling about $4.8 million from reserves, with total shortfalls across funds topping $7 million.

Related content from the archive:

  • Correction: Budget surpluses were much smaller than reported October 23, 2019
  • Only half of county budget cuts ‘tangible’ September 4, 2013

Biggest pressure points: roads, fire services, solid waste, and EMS.

To make it work, nearly $8 million is being shifted between funds — moving money around to cover gaps.

It's kind of like putting everything on your credit card and saying “future me will deal with it.”

🧳 Tourism money is stacking up… now what?

Baker County is sitting on about $1.5 million in tourism tax money — and officials are trying to figure out how to actually use it.

A new draft plan suggests moving beyond just funding festivals and into a real tourism push — think sports tournaments, outdoor trails, rivers, local history, and better marketing.

The goal: build something long-term, not just one-off events.

The catch? No one’s quite agreed on who’s in charge of making it happen yet.

Also raised in the meeting: What exactly are we promoting for people to come here for? …also a fair question.

🐾 Bobcats are… not playing around

Between baseball and softball, the Bobcats are on an absolute tear right now.

Baseball just locked up a conference championship, while softball is sitting undefeated and making it look easy.

At this point, it’s less “how are they doing?” and more “who’s stopping them?”

Short answer: no one, apparently. 🔥

*respectfully*

💬 Heard it through the grapevine

Every week we open up our anonymous Sound Off! form, and let’s just say… Baker County residents are not shy about sharing their thoughts. Some are funny, some are fiery, and some make you go “okay, fair point.”

📣 Got something to say? Send it in here

Here’s what readers had on their minds this week:

  • “A big cheer for Baker County! In a time when many communities feel divided, Baker County still shows true small-town values; neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers stepping up, and pride in our community. From cleanups to youth sports and local events, that spirit is worth protecting and celebrating.”
  • “We need better restaurants, family festivals, entertainment, and fix the boat ramp!”
  • “I would like to know when a light is going to be placed at Estates St. and 121? We can’t get out of Macclenny II anymore.”

⚡ Checking the pulse

In our poll this week, we asked: Do you feel prepared if a wildfire were to threaten your area?

Here’s how it shook out:

  • 54% said not really
  • 33% said yes
  • 13% said no

Soooo, most folks aren’t feeling ready — which, given the week we’re having, is… not ideal.

Might be a good time to double-check your plan (or make one, friends).

ICYMI: We have a Facebook poll channel! Weigh in on current topics in just one click! You can join the party here. 🥳

🐻 Your task for this week:

Share a Smokey the Bear GIF with someone… with absolutely no context. (Feel free to steal this one.)
