Cats lost district opener 41-14 at Ribault

Youth and inexperience caught up to the Wildcats September 19 as they lost their District 3-5A opener 41-14 at Ribault to fall to 1-3 overall on the season.

The injury-riddled defense allowed 27 unanswered points in the second half after the game was tied at halftime. The Trojans converted fourth downs on both of their third-quarter scoring drives to extend their lead to 27-14. Two more rushing touchdowns of 52- and 11-yards sealed Ribault’s win in the fourth.

Baker County fought back from a 14-point first-quarter deficit to even the score at halftime. Two Jacob Carter touchdown passes of about 30 yards to Vic Givens and Zach Rafuse tied the game going into the break.

The Wildcats will try to pull to .500 in district play September 26 when they host newly renamed Westside.

Cats fall just short of Providence 28-27

The Wildcats almost overcame the loss of star defensive end CeCe Jefferson and sloppy first half play, but their second-half surge fell just short September 12 as they lost to Providence 28-27.

Jefferson dislocated his shoulder on the fourth play of the game trying to tackle Providence’s workhorse running back Jamauri Wakefield, who rushed for more than 350 yards and three touchdowns on more than 40 carries of the night. Wakefield accounted for almost all of the Stallions’ offense as Baker County’s depleted defense had a tough time slowing him down. Coach Tom MacPherson said Jefferson is expected to miss a few weeks, but he returned to the sideline in the second half to cheer his team on.

The Cats almost rallied back after falling behind 28-14 early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jacob Carter hit a 50-yard bomb to Zach RafuseĀ  to pull the team within a touchdown. Vyshawn Akins intercepted one of Providence’s few pass attempts on the night and returned it for a touchdown to bring the Cats withing one with about seven minutes remaining, but the extra point failed.

The offense had a chance to take the lead late and faced a third-and-6 from Providence’s 20-yard line. The Cats took unsuccessful shots to the end zone on both third and fourth downs to give the ball back to the Stallions.

Providence was able to run the final 3 minutes, 58 seconds out to seal the win.

The Cats will try to bounce back from the close loss and move back to .500 on the season September 19 when they travel to Ribault for the District 3-5A opener.

Cats fall 46-26 at Ed White

The Wildcats didn’t get the performance they were looking for August 22 in the Kickoff Classic as they fell 46-26 at Ed White.

Baker County got off to a slow start to the game on both sides of the ball as the Commanders took a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cats tried to rally back after Vic Givens scored on a 40-yard catch-and-run from quarterback Jacob Carter that breathed life back into the team. But three first-half turnovers and a failed fourth-down conversion deep in Ed White territory derailed the momentum they were building.

The second half was back and forth with coach Tom MacPherson working in the back-ups and junior varsity players. JV player Eugene Farmer had a pair of interceptions in the second half to lead the defense.

The Wildcats will kickoff the regular season next Friday at home against St. Augustine.
