Teen birth rate dropping, but still hovers above state

Births to teen mothers in Baker County have fallen in recent years — down about 35 percent since 2010 — but public health officials believe there’s more to be done.

To that end the health department sought a grant from the Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition and its Teen Pregnancy Task Force for project its calling “Parent Perspectives in Baker County.”

Arrested for fleeing from deputy

A Lake City man who sped off in south Macclenny from a deputy sheriff, then nearly collided head-on with another, off-duty officer was arrested on multiple charges the evening of July 27.

Three others in an raucous crowd that gathered at the scene of the arrest off W. Minnesota Ave. were also taken to jail for refusing several requests to calm themselves and disperse.

Glen’s reserves dwindling

An audit of Glen St. Mary’s finances for the fiscal year that ended last September was recently presented by the Macclenny CPA firm of Lyons and Lyons.

Some highlights:

√ Though the town’s overall net assets jumped by $287,436 with the addition of a central water system north of US 90, Glen’s unrestricted assets (cash and certificates of deposit) continues to dwindle, resting at year’s end at $107,038. A $60,000 CD is restricted by Glen’s bonded indebtedness for past loans for utilities.

End of summer bash at library

A few dozen youths ventured to the Emily Taber library’s “End of Summer Party” the morning of July 30 to close the library’s summer youth program to encourage reading.

Children played games, painted pictures and rocked out to tunes like Who Let the Dogs Out as organizers handed out raffle prizes and cold drinks amid the 80-plus degree heat.
