Penny Katsacos, NEFSH retiree, dies

Penny W. Katsacos, 59, a lifelong resident of Macclenny, died Thursday, November 3, 2011, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center  surrounded by loving family and friends following a lengthy battle with systemic sclerosis.

Penny will long be remembered for her love of life, including gardening, cooking, camping, traveling, fishing, boating, gospel singing and spending time with family and friends. Her quick wit, amazing sense of humor  and sense of adventure brought joy and laughter to all who had the pleasure of being in her life.

Penny was a great leader and motivator known for leading by example, straightforward communications, stubborn determination and perseverance in the face of great adversity. She retired in 2007 after 33 ½ years at Northeast Florida State Hospital where she was a psychiatric aide, registered nurse, nurse manager and director of nursing.

She was an active member of Christian Fellowship Temple where she sang in the choir and performed in the puppet ministry. Penny’s love of Jesus was evident in her compassion for people and generous spirit. She was predeceased by parents Vernon and Willa Jean Walker and husband James A. Katsacos.

Survivors include sons Nick Katsacos (Tamara), Joey Katsacos (Ashley), both of Macclenny; brothers Danny Walker (Charlotte), St. Pete Beach, Keith Walker (Denise), Glen St. Mary, Kevin Walker (Teresa), Macclenny; sister Jean Marie Brazell (Mike), Kingsland, GA; grandson Nathan Katsacos; best friend forever Debby Norman; ten nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was held Saturday, November 5 at 11 am at her church. Donations may be made in her memory to the Missions Fund at CFT. Forbes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lula Mae Gibson, 86, of Macclenny, dies

Lula Mae Gibson, 86, of Macclenny, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011.

She was born in Cynthianna, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Gilbert and Edna Griffin Jones and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She is preceded in death by husband Otis Gibson and daughter Ann Norman.

Survivors include sons Wood­­y Gibson of Newcastle, Indiana; Delbert (Kay) Gibson of Deland; Gary (Glenda) Gibson and Richard (Beth) Gibson, both of Macclenny; daughter Jean (David) Weathington of Macclenny; brothers Tommy and Bobby Jones of Newcastle, Indiana and sister Lucy Bell of Florida; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and three great-great -grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service was held Saturday, November 5 at 1:30 pm at her church with Bishop Brent Whitney officiating. Interment followed at Manntown Cemetery in Glen St. Mary. Forbes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Conner, 75, Mason secretary, dies

Robert Allen Conner, 75, of Macclenny died November 5, 2011 at his residence.

He was born in Waycross, GA on February 18, 1936 to the late Wash Allen Conner and Ruth Catherine Youmans Conner. Robert was a resident of Macclenny for 39 years after moving from Jacksonville in 1972. He was a 1955 Andrew Jackson High School graduate and a member of Spring Glen United Methodist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. Robert was also a member of Dawkins Masonic Lodge # 60 of Macclenny where he served as the longest serving secretary in the State of Florida.

Mr. Conner retired on December 1, 1995 from the Federal Reserve Bank after 40 years and he served his country for 10 years in the Air National Guard. He enjoyed fishing, camping and being outdoors. He was a great handyman and an avid Gator fan.

Survivors include his loving wife Sandra S. Conner of Macclenny; children Pamela A. (Matthew) Corbin of Live Oak, Sheri L. (Bryan) Boulay and Keith P. (Sheree) Conner,  both of Jacksonville; sister Ruth Geneice (Sammie) Peterson; granddaughter Jennifer Lynn Corbin; and several beloved niec­­es and nephews.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, November 9 at 11:00 am at V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Services Chapel in Macclenny with Reverend Eric Burch officiating.
