Open houses: earlier, later in day

I just returned from the first of two open houses I have to attend two days before the start of school. As a working mother I am having to take off twice and eat lunch at my desk to get my children to their appointed schools for open house. I consider myself lucky because unlike parents who work in Jacksonville, I work in Macclenny and am able to take off to attend events such as this.

Rep. Crenshaw chairs business roundtable

U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R-Jacksonville) convened a roundtable lunch meeting on August 19 with selected business and government leaders to address their concerns, which included continued implementation of federal healthcare reforms, often referred to as Obamacare, federal corporate income tax deductions for the depreciation of value in assets over time and the gridlock in Congress on the farm bill and other issues.

Contractor withdraws annex bid near Macclenny II, city annexes 228 parcel for bank

Macclenny city commissioners annexed one property for a new bank and tentatively approved the annexation of a second parcel for a retail store last week. But it was a property that was not brought into the city that drew a crowd of protesters to the meeting the evening of August 13.

Glen lowers utility budget

Glen St. Mary mayor Juanice Padgett proposes to drop spending in the town’s water and sewer utility fund by about 6 percent in fiscal 2014, which places it at 93 percent of anticipated revenues for the same period.
