Zip lines OK’d amid neighbors’ fears

A blood curdling scream pierced the air at a meeting of the county’s Land Planning Agency during a hearing last week to consider plans for a zip line park on SR 121 across from Northeast Florida State Hospital.

The startling outburst was staged by opponents to illustrate their point that screams from zip liners whizzing through the air would be an unwelcome intrusion in the rural neighborhood.

An employee at Goody’s department store on South 6th in Macclenny was arrested along with an accomplice after they admitted to police taking part in a cash refund scam that spanned over the month of June and involved nearly $2000.

Tamara Harris, 29, of Macclenny admitted to sheriff’s investigator Rodney Driggers during an interview June 27 at county jail that she drew out cash from the store register on 36 occasions based on bogus returns using receipts from legitimate cash transactions.

Volunteer honored at juvenile justice luncheon

teen courtThe Baker County Juvenile Justice Council hosted the “Community Conversations” luncheon in Macclenny on June 25 where  representatives from Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Gilchrist, Levy and Union counties addressed the issues facing at-risk youth in the 8th Judicial Circuit.

The guest speaker was Assistant Secretary of Prevention of the Department of Juvenile Justice Wanda Finnie, who is traveling the state holding round table meetings to discuss the needs of at-risk youth and their families.

Also during the meeting, recent BCHS graduate and volunteer Mikayla Bosley (pictured at center) was recognized for her four years of service to the Teen Court program. She is pictured with Baker County Teen Court director Ryan Brannan and Ms. Finnie.
