Fixes floated for $2.5M deficit: tax increase, cuts to services and benefits

Facing a potential $2.5 million budget shortfall, which is an improvement over an earlier deficit projection of close to $3 million a week ago, county commissioners set out on a mission this week to seek ways to narrow the gap or eliminate it altogether.

Budget cuts, reducing services, postponing capital outlays and shopping around for less costly health insurance for employees were among the ideas discussed during a two-hour budget workshop the afternoon of July 2.

Cats rolling in off-season play

Andrew Dehart caught in a squeeze playWhile other students are taking vacations this summer, members of the BCHS baseball program has been hard at work ensuring they will be able to build upon last season.

They are split between two rosters. The A-Team is made up of 16 players who have experience playing for the Wildcats, and the B-Team of 25 sophomores and incoming freshmen. The two squads have combined to win all but two games β€” a loss and a tie β€” during summer play.

Although it’s always good to win, summer ball is primarily used for gaining experience, which is especially true for the younger players.
