Ellen Covey, 89, of Jacksonville Beach

Ellen Compton Covey, 89, of Jacksonville Beach died on March 23, 2013. She was born in Jacksonville on January 20, 1924, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Compton. Ellen graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and attended Florida State College For Women. She was a faithful member of Community Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, an elder, president of the Presbyterian Women and a choir member for 46 years. She also played the piano to first and second graders in Sunday School for 10 years.

Mrs. Covey was an active volunteer with Baptist Beaches Hospital Auxiliary for years, and a member of Selva Marina Country Club since 1957. The family business, Covey Furniture, was one of Ellen’s passions and she enjoyed years of working with customers.

Colson Johns, 76, Friday service

Colson Johns, 76, of Macclenny died on Monday, March 18, 2013. He was the son of the late George and Ruby Gainey Johns and is survived by daughter Jannette Copeland of Sanderson; grandchildren Ronny (Deedra) Dinkins of Glen St. Mary, Jaime Sigers of Macclenny and LaDonna Rhoden of Jacksonville; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter; special friend Debra Crawford of Macclenny; son-in-law Sammy Berry of Jacksonville.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 29 at Sanderson Congregational Holiness Church at 4 pm. The family will receive friends at the church following the service until 6 pm. Forbes Funeral Home of Macclenny was in charge of arrangements.

Martine Jones, 68, day care owner

Martine Sandra Jones, 68, of Jacksonville for most of her life, died  on March 19, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church of Maxville, owner and operator of Sandra’s Day Care in Jacksonville and in Maxville. Her love for children prompted her to care for foster children for many years. Her passions in life were gardening, plants, flowers, children and her family.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Charles E. Jones; daughters Donette Rafuse (Jr.), Rita Padgett (Joey), Cindy Smith (Matt), Joy Peterson (Vernon); sister Elsie Devon Cruce (Ray); grandchildren Oscar Rafuse, Lee Rafuse, Cricket Barton, Cookie Griffis, Noah Smith, Bailey Smith, Hannah Peterson, Gunner Peterson; great-grandchildren Tanner and Jozie Rafuse, Jasmine and Zoey Barton; three nieces and two nephews.

The funeral service was held on Monday, March 25 at 2 pm  at Fraser Funeral Home in Jacksonville with Pastor Gene Dillon and Chaplin Reese Edwards officiating. Interment followed at Long Branch Cemetery.

Manhunt ends, suspect in custody

Madison County sheriff's deputies survey the suspect's crashed vehicle.

Sheriff Joey Dobson reported the suspect who fled the crash on I-10 this morning near Sanderson has been captured by K-9 units at an unknown location.

A manhunt began for a black male, possibly armed, in his late 20s or early 30s south of the interstate in western Baker County following a high speed chase that began in Madison County.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office set up stop sticks on I-10 near the US 90 interchange to stop a white Dodge Charger being pursued by authorities from Madison, Suwannee and Columbia counties as well as the Florida Highway Patrol. The vehicle crashed in the tree line of the east bound lanes about 10:15 am.

The driver fled the car, even before it came to rest, said BCSO Deputy Ben Anderson at the scene. Sheriff Dobson said a passenger suffered minor injuires and was taken to Fraser hospital. The sheriff suspected drugs may be involved.
