It was an up and down week for the Wildcats basketball team going into this week’s district tournament. The Cats defeated Oakleaf easily, but stumbled against the Trinity Conquerors before coming back to beat Interlachen in the last seconds of Friday’s game.
The Wildcats opened the week with a 12-point win over Oakleaf on January 29. CeCe Jefferson had one of his more dominant halves of basketball with 12 points in the paint that helped propel BCHS to an early 6-point lead. The Cats were also sinking baskets from the perimeter in the half with Jesse Gardner hitting two three pointers and Charles Ruise Jr. one of the long bombs.
Gardner was on target throughout the night from the three point stripe. All 12 of his points came from outside the line.
BCHS led 35-29 at the half and kept the Knights at arm’s length while steadily building their lead. The key to the win was good free throw shooting from Johnny Lamb and Cameron Mack in the fourth quarter as the Knights fouled to get back in the game.
Ruise led the Cats with 17 points. Lamb had 15, Jefferson 14 and Mack 6.
• It was a completely different story on January 31, as the Conquerors came to town and defeated their hosts 56-42. The Wildcats stayed close to Trinity in the first but struggled in the second half. The Conquerors built a small lead in the third period but went on an 11-6 run to close out the game.
Ruise led BCHS with 17 points and Lamb had 12 points.
• It took a basket in the last 10 seconds of the game for BCHS to snatch a 43-42 victory from Interlachen on Friday night. The game was a back and forth affair with the Cats maintaining a slim lead until the Rams pulled ahead at the end.
BCHS held on to a four-point lead throughout the third period, taking a 34-30 lead into the final quarter. Then the Rams hit a pair of clutch three pointers to tie the game and pull ahead.
BCHS had possession with the time running down and with under 10 seconds on the clock Johnny Lamb sunk the bucket that would give the Cats the win.
Lamb finished as high scorer for BCHS with 12 points. He was the only Wildcat in double figures. Ruise had 9, Adrian Robinson 7 and Cameron Mack 6 points.
The Wildcats go into this week’s district tournament at Bishop Kenny seeded third with a 2-2 district record and an 18-5 overall record. The Wildcats will face Paxon at 6 pm on Friday, November 8.
