Hundreds of people gather at Macclenny’s Knabb Sports Complex every Tuesday and Friday from June until August to participate in the Church Coed Volleyball Ministry of Baker County.
The volleyball league has grown in popularity almost every year since it was created more than 15 years ago. Committee member Nancy Griffis said it started in the ballpark’s outfield with “maybe five teams.” The league now boasts 52 teams with more than 300 players from 15 churches in the area.
The Little League District 11 All-Star softball and baseball tournaments continued throughout last week despite the poor weather, and Baker County teams posted a great showing.
Several local teams have already been crowned district champions, while a few others will get the chance to play for the title through the remainder of the week.
The major softball team won the district title in front of a home crowd on Friday, July 5.
Baker County High School varsity boys basketball coach Charles Ruise Sr. is expecting big things from the team when the season tips off later this year, and the foundation for that is being laid this summer.
The Wildcats begin summer games July 9 against Forrest, and will play nine more games over the course of the next month. Winning isn’t as important in these games, as they will primarily be used to get players some additional time on the court.
