Clay, Menendez out-stroke the Cats

The BCHS swim team faced tougher competition September 4 at Clay and came in third place in a tri-meet that also featured Menendez despite having 12 top-three finishes.Jonathan-Mobley
The numbers game caught up to the Wildcats as the Blue Devil and Falcon swim teams outpointed them based on the size of their teams. Menendez outscored Baker County 107-67 and Clay defeated the Cats 142-40. Coach Jonathan Mobley said the final scores were not indicative of the team’s performance.
“Our times are continuing to improve,” coach Mobley said. “We’re swimming pretty good. We’re moving in the right direction.”
Jonathan Mobley posted the team’s only first-place finish with a time of 1 minute, 10.12 seconds in the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke. He also finished in third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.73.
Both the boys’ and girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay teams came in second in their respective events. The boys finished with a time of 1:45.87 and the girls’ A-team ended with a time of 2:08.20.
Kelsea Crain finished second in both the girls’ 50-yard freestyle (28.49) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.41).
Ethan Knight came in second in the boys’ 100-yard backstroke (1:09.57). He also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.37).Ethan-Knight-relay-team_Brandon-Wheeler-back
Brandon Wheeler posted a second-place finish in the boys’ 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.31.
The relay teams once again finished in the same position as both the boys’ and girls’ 200-yard medley relay came in third. The boys finished with a time of 2:06.29 and the girls with a time of 2:22.48.
Ashton Alford posted a personal best time of 2:23.25 to take third place in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle.
The Cats took to the pool once again September 9 with a home meet against Westside. The team travels to Bolles September 13 for an invitational.

Volleyball Cats lose to Tigers, Stanton, then best Warriors

Baker County lost in three straight sets September 9 as the squad fell to Columbia County 23-25, 19-25, 14-25. After a close first set, the girls fell behind by as many as 11 points in the second set after Delicia Washington left with an ankle injury. She returned in the third set and led the team with five kills in the game, but the Lady Tigers scored the final five points to take the win.

Wildcats blowout Bradford 43-7

Head coach Tom MacPherson picked up his first win as Wildcat head coach September 5 as the team rolled through hosting Bradford County Tornadoes 43-7 to improve to 1-1 on the season..

Baker County's offense had a monster night as Jacob Carter, Vic Givens and Jarvis Desue combined for four touchdowns on the ground. Carter ran for 111 yards on five carries, including a 55-yard touchdown blast up the middle in the third quarter. Givens ran for almost 50 yards and added two rushing touchdowns, while Desue had one of his own.

Carter also found receiver Zach Rafuse on a perfect 28-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

The defense was dominant most of the night and shut down Bradford's offense. CeCe Jefferson rebounded from Week 1's quiet game with as a forced a fumble and made first contact on a gang sack. The senior defensive end also deflected a ball that fell into Junior Higdon's hands for a pick-six for the team's final score of the game.

The Wildcats will look to move above .500 September 12 when they host Providence.

Jackets sting Wildcats in opener, 20-6

The Baker High Wildcats put up a tough fight August 29 in their season opener, but ultimately fell 20-6 to the visiting St. Augustine Yellow Jackets to start the year out 0-1.
