The area’s best Little League baseball and softball players are competing against each other in District 11 All-Star tournament action.

Macclenny’s Minger Fields are hosting all the tournament’s soft ball games, which got underway June 29. A Saturday morning thunderstorm delayed the start and made for wet conditions, but the weather didn’t dampen enthusiasm.

A giant crowd filled the bleachers and lined a kaleidoscope of colored lawn chairs along the fences as the grounds keepers re-groomed the field after the downpour.

Bullets finish second with 60+ best times

The YMCA Baker Bullets were not able to continue their team win streak at a tri-meet in Fernandina Beach on June 29, but the swimmers still had an impressive showing.

The overall team scores came down to the size of the rosters, which worked to the advantage of the host squad from the McArthur Y.

They had about 120 swimmers competing against Baker’s 61 and St. Augustine’s 21, which was too much to overcome, Coach Chris Knight said.

Passes on the writer’s torch

It’s been a nice run but I’m hanging up my cleats.

That’s the kind of thing athletes say when they retire from the sport. I’m not exactly retiring from news writing, but I am stepping aside for fresh blood.

As you might have noticed last week, The Press has a new sports writer, Jon Shumake, a recent UNF grad. He will bring a new look to covering sports.

Summer volleyball games on tap in July

While other high school students are going to the beach and catching some sun, Heather Sulkowski’s prospective volleyball girls are hard at work getting ready for the fall. The girls who will be trying out for the volleyball team in the fall are sharpening their skills with travel ball this summer.
