Teen excels at jiu jitsu competition

A teenage girl from Glen St. Mary has been making a name for herself recently in the male-dominated world of martial arts.

Ashlynn Johnson began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), a martial arts discipline focused on grappling and wrestling in favor of striking, when she was 10 years old and has been training for four years now. She said it started as just another sport  — great for getting and staying in shape. It has evolved into much more though.

The 9 and 10-year-old Baker County Little League All-Star baseball team finished fifth in the state championship tournament held in Mims, FL last weekend.

The boys were unable to match the success they had when they rolled through the District 11 and Section 3 tournaments earlier this summer, but the team still played well despite going 1-2 during the state tournament.

All-Stars: 9-10 squad to state; four teams in sectionals

The Little League All-Star tournaments continued last week with four Baker County teams competing in sectional play and one advancing to the state tournament.

The 9 and 10-year-old baseball team has had an exciting run in the tournament thus far, and that didn’t change during the Section 3 tournament in Mims, FL. They cruised to a 16-2 victory over Debary to advance to the championship game against Indian River City.

Bullets swimmers prepare to dive in.

The Baker Bullets swim team returned to the pool at the Baker County Family YMCA July 13 with an impressive showing against Winston YMCA from Ponte Vedra.

Poor weather prevented the Bullets from practicing through much of the week leading up to the meet, but it didn’t slow the team down. They outscored the Winston Waves 2,659 to 1,084 en route to another victory.
