QB Jacob Carter to Southeastern, Safety Blayne Merchant to WPI

National Signing Day started off early in Baker County as Wildcat quarterback Jacob Carter and safety Blayne Merchant signed their National Letter of Intents on the morning of February 4 in a ceremony held in front of teammates, family, faculty and coaches.

Merchant committed to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, located about an hour west of Boston. He visited Pensacola's University of West Florida over the weekend, but opted with WPI due to its longstanding mechanical engineering program.

"They're just now going to be starting in 2016 their mechanical engineering program," he said of UWF,  "so I was a little bit iffy on committing to a school that's going to be starting a program, or going to a school that's had the program for hundreds of years."

While Merchant's decision came down to the final days, Carter made his commitment to Lakeland's Southeastern University known last week. He decided on the school because of its Christian environment and its coaching staff.

He said he is happy to put the recruiting process behind him and begin his collegiate journey in August.

"It feels great. It's finally over. I'm just ready and looking forward to actually getting there and starting," Carter said.
