‘Sports Gene’ worth a look Book author tackles controversial ideas

I ran into a most interesting radio interview on NPR the other day with Sports Illustrated senior writer David Epstein, who has written a book called The Sports Gene.

The book is a little controversial because it examines whether some people are naturally better athletes than others, the importance of practice and how rewarding people for being good at sports affects the number of people who want to be sportsmen or women.

Fall baseball is cancelled

Baker County Little League cancelled this year’s fall baseball season due to a lack of players signing up.

“Unfortunately, after totaling the numbers we don’t have enough players in any age group to run fall ball this season,” said league official Melissa Burnsed. “We will be calling parents this week about check shredding and refunds.”

Former Wildcat football star Kendrick Singleton could be poised to make a major impact at the collegiate level this year for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.

He is entering training camp as the starting slot receiver for the team after playing primarily on special teams as a true freshman last year. He recorded 12 tackles last season, but his first year was more of a learning experience, both on and off the field.
