Newspaper captures 11 awards

The Baker County Press won 11 awards in the Florida Press Association’s 2012 Better Weekly Newspaper Contest, including its first-ever award for general excellence, on July 18 in Orlando.

The newspaper competed in the under 7000 circulation division of the contest and took home eight first place honors in addition to second place and third place awards.

A teenage girl from Glen St. Mary has been making a name for herself recently in the male-dominated world of martial arts.

Ashlynn Johnson began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), a martial arts discipline focused on grappling and wrestling in favor of striking, when she was 10 years old and has been training for four years now. She said it started as just another sport  — great for getting and staying in shape. It has evolved into much more though.

The 9 and 10-year-old Baker County Little League All-Star baseball team finished fifth in the state championship tournament held in Mims, FL last weekend.

The boys were unable to match the success they had when they rolled through the District 11 and Section 3 tournaments earlier this summer, but the team still played well despite going 1-2 during the state tournament.
