Johnny C. Stratton, 81, of Macclenny died on Wednesday, July 3, 2013. He was born July 29, 1931 to the late Happy and Geneva Hutto Stratton, and was an electrician at Williamson Electric, retiring after 40 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, reading Western books and spending time with his family and friends.

Melvin Lucille “Nannie” Tharpe, 98, of Macclenny died on July 7, 2013 at her daughter’s residence surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Bradford County on November 11, 1914 to the late Chase Driggers and Esther Hicks Driggers Rehberg and resided in Macclenny for 64 years. Lucille was a homemaker, the loving mother of six children and a member of the Macclenny Church of Christ.
Theresa Barbara Mahan, 46, of Macclenny died on July 3, 2013 at Macclenny Nursing and Rehab Center with family by her side. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 24, 1967 to Gerald Nelson and Valerie Zarnowski Nelson. Theresa was a resident of Macclenny since 2004 after moving from California. She attended Brandy Branch Baptist Church and retired from the Walmart Supercenter in Macclenny as a manager in 2012 after 13 years of dedicated service.
Hundreds of people gather at Macclenny’s Knabb Sports Complex every Tuesday and Friday from June until August to participate in the Church Coed Volleyball Ministry of Baker County.
The volleyball league has grown in popularity almost every year since it was created more than 15 years ago. Committee member Nancy Griffis said it started in the ballpark’s outfield with “maybe five teams.” The league now boasts 52 teams with more than 300 players from 15 churches in the area.
