Land owners wince at mining ban

The Baker County Conservation Alliance has a perfect batting average so far, waging two successful grass roots campaigns to kill plans for a medical waste incinerator north of US 90 last year and a sand mine on duPont’s property east of SR 228 in July.

But the citizens group is meeting stiff resistance to its latest tactic ­— convincing the county to prohibit sand mining entirely. Some of the county’s largest landowners are kicking up a ruckus.
