With elections looming in both Glen St. Mary and Macclenny this fall, the week-long qualifying period began Monday and continues through midday on Friday. So far, it appears that most of the candidates will be incumbents.

There is one exception in Group 4 Macclenny where six-term incumbent Dr. Richard Johnson took himself out of contention. The retired dentist had been on the city board 24 years, and there’s now three-man contest to replace him.

Teen is caught on tape stealing beer

Police have identified and are seeking a 16-year-old Macclenny youth whose image was captured on a surveillance tape when he entered CVS Pharmacy downtown in the early morning of July 1 and stole two 12-packs of Lima-Rita, a fruit-flavored beer.

27 months for meth sale

A Macclenny man was sentenced on June 25 in circuit court to 27 months in state prison after pleading no contest to sale of methamphetamine to an undercover buyer working for the sheriff’s department in December of last year.

Wesley Lewis, 43, is a convicted felon who served time in the federal system for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in a 2005 case that was remanded to a higher court.

County attorney likely will step down

Terry Brown’s days as chief counsel to the Baker County Commission may be numbered, depending on the outcome of additional medical testing over the coming weeks.

Mr. Brown, longtime county attorney who also maintains a private practice in Starke, recently experienced what was described as another minor stroke and is in the process of selling the practice to former law partner Ron Sholes, who has offices in Starke, Jacksonville and Orange Park.
