Macclenny man arrested for brandishing knife on CR 139B

Police arrested a Macclenny man and charged him with aggravated assault by pulling a knife on another man the afternoon of July 12 while at an address on CR 139B west of Glen St. Mary.

Willie Dempsey Jr., 23, told Deputy Koty Crews that Michael Waters Jr., 25, threatened him with a shovel about 3:40 after he went to the latter’s residence seeking $100 he claimed was owed to him.

Macclenny City Commission eyes 13.8% tax rate hike

After receiving a report on new construction permits that will help broaden Macclenny’s tax base, city commissioners tentatively approved the city manager’s request for a 13.8 percent property tax hike last week.

If the higher rate remains in the 2013-14 budget, which begins October 1, property owners would begin paying 4.1 mills, or $4.10 for every $1,000 of assessed value, instead of 3.6 mills.

For example, the owner of a house with a taxable value of $100,000, after deducting for the homestead exemption, would pay $410 in city taxes next year instead of $360, in addition to county government, school district and other taxes.
