Edward Murphy of Glen St. Mary

Edward “Ed” D. Murphy, 92, of Glen St. Mary died March 18, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Lake City. He was born in Lyons, GA to the late Charley Murphy and Viana Abbott Murphy on December 18, 1919. He honorably served in the US Army during World War II and in later years was an automotive mechanic.

Mr. Murphy was a resident of Baker County since 1981 when he moved from Jacksonville. He was a single father. His children were first in his life and world. He enjoyed woodworking, yard work, gardening and activities where he could use his hands. He was predeceased by his son Donald Edward Murphy.

Shirley Quinn, 70, of Macclenny

Shirley Jean Quinn, 70, of Macclenny died Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Macclenny Nursing and Rehab Center after a long illness. Ms. Quinn was born in Jesup, GA to the late J.T. and Sara Frances Riddle Surrency and lived most of her life in Macclenny. She enjoyed growing roses and flowers, reading her Bible and praying. She attended the Vineyard of Love Ministries in Olustee when able.

Ms. Quinn was preceded in death by sisters Gail Carnal, Frances Upton and Linda Chisholm, and brother Thad Surrency.

Survivors include her children Donna Williams, Alma (Delbert) Benefield, James Geiger, Thomas Geiger and John Wayne Geiger; brother Tommy Surrency; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Stephen Sands, 48, of Sanderson

Stephen William Sands, 48, of Sanderson died Sunday, March 18, 2012. A lifelong resident of Baker County, he retired from the Florida Department of Corrections and was the former owner of Sands Land Clearing. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include sons Nick Sands, Justin Sands and Mitch Davis, all of Sanderson and Mathew Sands of St. George, GA; daughter Kayse Sands of St. George; brothers George Franks of Glen St. Mary, Buddy Franks of Sanderson, Kay Sands of New Orleans, LA and Chance Johnson of Macclenny; three grandchildren also survive.

Shirley Timmons 68, of Macclenny

Shirley Timmons, 68, died Saturday, March 17 after an extended illness. She lived at 11865 Faye Road in Macclenny but was in West Jacksonville Nursing Facility for the last two years. She was born in Jesup, GA to Marion and Isabelle Griffis and they  moved to Jacksonville when she was a toddler. She is preceded in death by daughter Janie Lee Timmons Ives and sisters Velma Jones, Juanita Jones, Letha Vinson and Dorothy Bell.

Survivors include son Douglas Michael Timmons; grandsons Albert Sailor Ives III, Jamie Scott Timmons and Jason Ryan Timmons; siblings Ginny (Bebe) Starling, Buddy (Pat) Griffis, Evelyn (Tony) Walden, Wayne (Linda) Griffis, Judy (Leroy) Johannes, Raymond Griffis; loving companion of 31 years Joe Starling; many nieces and nephews.
