Wilford Crews, 46, dies October 23

Wilford Lamar Crews, 46, of Macclenny died Sunday October 23 at his home following a long illness.

He had resided in Macclenny all of his life. He was a newspaper delivery man with the Florida Times Union at the time of his death. He also was self-employed as a roofer and an auto mechanic for many years. Mr. Crews attended Raiford Road Church, was an avid Gator fan and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by parents Jefferson Thomas Crews and Frances Wilkerson Crews.

Survivors include soulmate Mary Thomas; daughter Julie Thomas, granddaughter Kirsten Thomas; brother David Gatlin; sisters Marilyn (Kenneth) Turk, all of Macclenny and Debra Gainey of Glen St. Mary; numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial visitation for family and friends was held from 6-9 pm Wednesday, October 26 at Guerry Funeral Home in Macclenny. Final disposition was by cremation.

John J. Crews, 61, dies

John James Crews III, 61, of Kingsley Lake died Wednesday, October 19, 2011 of a recent illness.

Mr. Crews was born in Jacksonville on January 18, 1950 to the late John J. Crews Jr. and Pauline W. Crews. Mr. Crews lived most of his life in Baker, Union, and Clay Counties. He was a graduate of The Bolles School and the University of Florida with a BA in 1975. He was a correctional officer and retired in 2002. He enjoyed reading, history, hunting and Florida Gator football.

Survivors include his wife Debbie Crews; children Colby Droubi of California, Laci Crews of Jacksonville, John Charles “Chuck” Crews of Lake Butler; step-daughter Rebeckah Gann Shemer; sister Debra Crews Treece; brother Brian W. Crews; eight grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Crews was held Tuesday, October 25 in the chapel of Archer Funeral Home in Lake Butler with Bro. Scott Fisher officiating.

Jimmy Ellis, 66, retired ironworker

Jimmy Leon Ellis, 66, of Macclenny died October 23, 2011.

He was born in Clearwater to the late Calvin Ellis and Maxine Hodges Manning on July 15, 1945. He was a life long resident of Baker County and a member of the Ironworkers Local Union 597. Jimmy retired from T & G Steel after working for 28 years. He loved to fish, play guitar,and watch football and races. He was predeceased by Sylvester and Maxine Manning, Calvin Ellis, Jamie Ellis, Jimmy L. Cotterman, Seirra Roberson , Joseph “Bud” Harvey, Hilda Manning, Michael Tetstone and Dawn Ellis.

Survivors include children Teresa Ellis (Michael Stanford), Lisa (Anthony) Hutchinson, Jimmy Ellis Jr. Tina Brown and Susan Brown; brothers Johnny (Bernice) Manning, James Manning, Wyman Manning and Darryl Wayne Manning; sisters Janice (Billy) Sanford, Jeannie (Calvin) Edwards and Janet (Tommy) Lauramore, Evelyn Bennett Ellis; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held Tuesday October 25 at 2 pm at V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Services with Pastor Tommy Anderson officiating. Interment followed at Macedonia Cemetery in Macclenny.

Mildred Howe, 77 of Starke, dies

Mildred Thrift Howe, 77, of Starke died October 22, 2011 at E. T. York Hospice Center in Gainesville. She was born in Taylor on February 14, 1934 to the late Spencer Thrift and Betty Combs Thrift.

Mildred was born and raised in Baker County and moved to Bradford County in 1967. She retired from Dr. Patray’s Office in Keystone Heights after over 20 years of dedicated work as a receptionist.

Mrs. Howe was a member of the First Baptist Church of Starke and enjoyed reading and listening to gospel and country music. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Rev. Lloyd Thomas Howe, and daughter Karen Hunsinger.

Survivors include sons Mike (Michelle) Howe of Wake Forrest, NC and Kevin (Donna) Howe of Starke; sister Evelyn (Joe) Barber of Macclenny; grandchildren Allan Hunsinger, Nick Howe, Jonathan Howe, and Jordan Howe; great grandchildren Hayley Burke and Taylor Hunsinger.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, October 26 at 11 am at Archie Tanner Funeral Services in Starke with Reverend Robert Dennison officiating. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.
