Jack Ford Sr., brother of local

Jack Samuel Ford Jr died January 8, 2012. He was born in Brunswick, GA to Jack Ford Sr and Edna Mae Ford and raised in Kissimmee. After graduating from Osceola High School, he moved to Tallahassee to attend college. Upon marrying Antonette L. Walker in Pensacola, they moved to Ft. Lauderdale. In 1992 he joined the United States Navy and moved first to California then to Norfolk, VA where his son Jack Samuel Ford III was born.

Mr. Ford continued his work as a dental tech until completion of dental repair school in 2000. He then moved his family to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and his military career then moved his family to Middleburg, then to Naples, Italy and finally to Green Cove Springs. Jack retired as a bio-med tech in July 2009 and the most important aspect of his life was his devoted family. He was preceded in death by his father.

Bill Durrance, 91, of Macclenny dies

John R. “Bill” Durrance, 91, died January 14, 2012. He was born on November 5, 1920 in Jacksonville to John and Viola Durrance and lived in Jacksonville most of his life before moving to Macclenny in 1998 to be closer to his family. Bill served from 1939 to 1945 in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he met his wife of 63 years, Kathryn “Cappy” Durrance.

Following an honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, Mr. Durrance joined the Duval County Road Patrol in 1946 and retired from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 1972. He enjoyed gardening, mowing his yard, working in his workshop, playing Bingo with his Pickettville friends and attending church at the Christian Fellowship Temple. Bill was passionate about baseball, not only as a player, but coaching children, playing in various leagues throughout his life, even playing semi-pro baseball. He had a love for the game, a passion that he instilled in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Papa Bill” and “Bull.” He was often found playing catch with his family and caregivers right up until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, son Johnny Durrance and great-granddaughter Hannah Rhoden.

Mary Harrington, 74, of Auburn, AL

Mary Ruis Harrington, 74, of Auburn died January 3, 2012 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. She was born in Sanderson on July 14, 1937 and was a member of Society Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Harrington was preceded in death by her parents Bert Ruis and Margaret Skinner; brother Archie Ruis; sisters Matilda Johnson and Annie Mae Sequine, and grandson Matt Jones.

Survivors include husband John Harrington; sister Jewel Reddish; son Douglas (Jane) Brown and Randy (Sharon) Brown; daughters Letricia (Tommy) McInarnay, Penny (Robert) Walters, Brenda (Roy) Cadenhead; stepchildren Vickie Hamby, Mickey (Karen) Harrington, Debra Reach, Sharon (Chip) Davis; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

George Crawford, 61, of Macclenny

George Dwain Crawford, 61, of Macclenny died January 5, 2012 at Orange Park Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Crawford was a lifelong resident of Macclenny and the son of the late Amos and Nancy Mae Bennett Crawford.  He was a truck driver for many years and a member of the Macclenny Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include six stepchildren; sisters Janice Crawford of Macclenny, Betty (Millage) Burnsed of Jacksonville and Bonnie Jean (Finis) McDonald of Katie, TX; brothers  Amos Crawford of Lake Butler, Auzzie (Bertha) Crawford and Bobby (Bernice Jean) Crawford, both of Glen St. Mary; several step-grandchildren also survive.
