Patricia Edwards, Kennesaw, GA, dies

Patricia Anne Edwards of Kennesaw, GA died November 15, 2011 from complications of COPD and lung cancer.  She was a native of Baldwin and was preceded in death by her husband William R. Edwards.

She was a little girl from Baldwin, Fl that never imagined the places she would travel all over the world.  She’s made her last trip now but what a glorious homecoming it is.  She will be loved and missed more than words can say.

Survivors include sons Stephen Edwards (Sharyn), Dan Edwards, Doug Edwards (Jeanna); daughter Paula Graves (Matt); siblings Helen Wilson (Max) of Jamesville, VA, Mary Echternkamp and Bill Young both of Macclenny; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pat wished to be cremated and that her family conduct a memorial service to commemorate her life later in the year.

Emily Taber, 99, library namesake, dies

Emily Hughes Taber, 99, of Glen St. Mary died November 20 at Acosta Rua North Florida Community Hospice after a brief illness.

Mrs. Taber was born in Jacksonville on December 28, 1911 and moved to Glen St. Mary shortly after she married the late George Taber Jr. in 1935. She was throughout her life an active volunteer and was best known as the founder of the public library in Baker County that was later named for her.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1998 and is survived by son Lin and daughter Cam, both of Glen St. Mary; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Taber, affectionately known as “Miss Emily” and “Ammie,” was a committed Christian who continually glorified her Lord with a phenomenal flow of generosity and love toward all who knew her.

A memorial service and celebration of Mrs. Taber’s life will be held on Monday, November 28 at 2 pm at the Mathis House on Glen St. Mary Nursery Rd. Donations in Mrs. Taber’s memory may be made to the Emily Taber Library or to St. Peter’s in the Glen Anglican Church.

Jason Harrison, 43, Army veteran, dies

Jimmy Taylor Hayes, 55, of St. George, GA died Wednesday, November 16, 2011, after an extended illness. He was the owner of JT Custom Marine and enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by parents John B. and Wanda Sisk Hayes and brother Donald Hayes.

Survivors include daughter Jamie Hayes of Middleburg; brother John Hayes of Arizona; sisters Peggy Rivera of Miami, Clara Ring of Alma and Patsy Bushea of Miami; grandchildren Taylor, Kristin, Bubba, Faith, Dillon and Shailee; life partner Melissa Curbow.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 19 at the Glen Friendship Tabernacle Church, Glen St. Mary with the Rev. Albert Starling officiating. Forbes Funeral Home of Macclenny was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Gazes, 90, of Greer, SC, dies

Ruth Dorrity Gazes of Greer, SC died November 18, 2011. Mrs. Gazes was born July 11, 1921 in Newberry, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Benjamin L. and Ruth Lindsey Dorrity.  She was a graduate of Newberry High School, a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Charleston and attended St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Greenville, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband James C. Gazes.   

Survivors include daughter Hope G. Kapetanakos of Greer; sons Christopher James Gazes of Macclenny and Peter James Gazes of Charleston; grandchildren Peter C. Kapetanakos (Kimberly), James C. Kapetanakos (Kimberly) and James C. Gazes; great-grandchildren  Christopher and Katherine Kapetanakos; brother Benjamin L. Dorrity of Greenville; and a brother-in-law Dr. Peter C. Gazes (Athena) of Charleston.

The funeral service was held at her church Tuesday, November 22 at 2:00 pm.  Interment followed in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Charleston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Project Hope Foundation, 2131 Woodruff Road, Suite 2100, Greenville, SC  29607. J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
