88, of Bryceville dies

Virginia “Nanny” Higginbotham, 88, of Bryceville died Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Jacksonville on March 7, 1923 to Charles Barr Suits and Audell Jones-Suits. Virginia was a lifelong resident of Bryceville, and a  member since 1937 of Brandy Branch Baptist Church, where she taught Bible school, Sunday school and played the piano.

Virginia enjoyed sewing and craft work, flower gardening, and reading. She also worked for the Nassau County School District, where she drove a school bus for over 25 years. Virginia was preceded in death by husband of 62 years, Freddy Leroy Higginbotham; daughter Nath­­alee Hargrove; son Thomas Hig­­­­ginbotham; two sisters; and four brothers.

Survivors include daughter Linda (Peewee) Knight of Bryce­­ville; brother Jim Suits; sisters Donna Fouraker and Rosemary Jarrod; 13 grandchildren; and 25 ­great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held July 26 at 11:00 am at her church with Pastor Rusty Ryan officiating. Interment will follow at Brandy Branch Cemetery. V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Gunter, 75, truck driver, dies

Harold Gunter, 75, truck driver

Harold Otis Gunter, 75, of Macclenny died in Gainesville on July 23, 2011. He was born May 23, 1936 in Jacksonville to Arthur Gunter and Molly White Gunter. He served in the Army for eight years with the 553 Engineer. He was an avid Florida Gator fan and a dedicated truck driver for 48 years. He lived in Macclenny for 40 years and was a member of Mt. Zion Church for over 30 years.

Survivors include his loving wife Clara Lee Gunter; daughter Zena Davis; son Kenneth Gunter; son-in-law Pete (Wanda) Davis; grandsons Duane (Brandy) Davis, Dustin Davis and Cody Davis; granddaughter Stephanie (John Marcus) Starling; and three great-grandchildren.

Following his cremation, the family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.

Louise Manning, 85, of Baldwin dies

Louise Manning, 85, of Baldwin

Louise Manning, 85, of Baldwin died July 17, 2011. She was born in Baldwin on November 4, 1925 to Walter Manning and Annie Bell Hardy Manning, and was a member of Collins Chapel A.M.E. Church in Baldwin.

Survivors include daughter Evelyn (James) Davis; grandchildren Cynthia (Kenneth) Hol­­­­­land, Carey Holland, Valerie Holland, Jeffery Holland, Kevin Davis, Bruce Hatcher, Mark Hatcher; 14 grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and  a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held July 23 at her church at 11:00 am. Interment followed at Piney Grove Cemetery. Carthage Chapel Funeral Home in Jacksonville was in charge of arrangements.

John Motherwell, 64, of Sanderson, dies

John Motherwell, 64, of Sanderson

John Arthur Motherwell, 64, of Sanderson died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville. A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, Mr. Motherwell lived in Sanderson for the past 20 years. He was a retired veteran of the United States Navy, retiring in 1988 as a chief with 24 years of service and three tours in Vietnam.

Mr. Motherwell owned and operated his own custom furniture business from 1990-2000, was a past instructor for extraction at Lake City Community College and taught firefighter 1 and first responder classes for a number of years. He also was a licensed paramedic and worked with Baker County Emergency Management for 10 years, was the Baker County fire marshal for 10 years and was a volunteer with the Baker County Fire Department for 16 years. Mr. Motherwell was a Baptist.

Survivors include wife Rosemary K. Motherwell of Sanderson; sons Robert Allen (Brenda) of St. Augustine, Steve Motherwell of Memphis, TN and Scott (Dedra) Motherwell of Germantown, TN; daughters Rosanne (Chuck) Austin of Green Cove Springs and Diana Smith of Sardis, MS; brothers Dave Motherwell of Wichita Falls, TX and Gary Motherwell of North East, PA; sisters Nancey Colter of Indiana, Alta Skinner of Erie, PA and Frances Miller, North East, PA; grandchildren Amanda, Whit­­ney, J.J., John, Graham, Emily and Dustin.

A graveside funeral service for Mr. Motherwell was held July 27 at 11:00 a.m. at North Prong Cemetery with Rev. Tom Pope officiating. Interment followed. Guerry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
