Faye McCollum dies December 19

Sylvia Faye McCollum of Macclenny died on Wednesday, December 19, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her garden, fishing and found a sense of peace in taking care of her family and friends. She was the wife of the late Calvin Grant “Mac” McCollum and was preceded in death by parents Herbert and Eva Mae Crews Harris and her sister Eloise Harris Crews. She was born in Jacksonville and resided in Macclenny all of her life.

Mrs. McCollum is survived by sons Randy Long, Ronnie (Jill) Long and Ricky Long, all of Baker County; step-son Char (Debbie) McCollum of Jacksonville; grandchildren Dawson Allen Long, Jordan Zoe Long and Lacey Lee King; sister Linda (Jim) Pifer and brother Herbert (Sherry) Harris Jr., both of Glen St. Mary; nieces and nephews and her pet companion Lizzie.

The funeral service was held at 3 pm Saturday, December 22 at Sanderson Congregational Holiness Church with Rev. David Thomas officiating, assisted by Rev. Justin Griffis. Interment was at South Prong Cemetery, Sanderson. Guerry Funeral Home of Macclenny was in charge of arrangements.

Mike Yarbrough dies December 21

Michael Vincent Yarbrough, 68, of Kernersville, N.C. died on Friday, December 21, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He was born on January 21, 1944 in Taylor to Henrietta L. Yarbrough and the late Roy Yarbrough. Michael was a proud graduate of the University of Florida where he received a PhD in philosophy and a master’s degree in linguistics. He most recently taught philosophy and Southern literature at Wake Forest University. Michael loved cycling, fishing, hiking and gardening.

In addition to his mother he is survived by wife Kathleen Ann Sumrall Yarbrough of Kernersville; sisters Ruby (Bill) Barg and Janie (Mike) Dennard, all of Macclenny; nephews Brent Dennard of Macclenny and George Barg of Jacksonville; niece Judith Perez of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law Shelley Biessenberger of Walkertown. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Gracie Poitevint was a minister

Gracie Lee Poitevint, 80, of Macclenny died on Saturday, December 8, at St. Vincents Medical Center in Jacksonville following a brief illness. She was born in Bainbridge, GA and lived in Lake City, Macclenny and Callahan for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Henry Outler and Ruby Corine Yown Poitevint. She was a former business owner and ordained minister, and a member of the Jacksonville Word of Faith Church.

She was preceeded in death by siblings Dallas and Monta Poitevint. She is survived by daughter Simone (James) Fouraker of Jacksonville; sons Gary (Hilda) Harrington of White Springs, FL and Rocky Harrington of Lake City; sister Betty Boston of Lake City;  brothers Edgar (Marion) and Ben Poitevint, both of Branford, FL; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Joseph Mann, 64, dies December 4

Joseph E. Mann 64, of Glen St. Mary died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Veterans Medical Center in Lake City after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Baker County, the son of Funston Mann, who preceded him in death. He was a long distance truck driver, a member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV.

Mr. Mann is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Thelma Louise Stephens Mann of Glen St. Mary; daughters Lisa Manning (Richard) of Sneads, Edna Jo Medina (Elvin) of Sanderson and Crystal Summey (Joseph) of Jacksonville; son Roscoe Stephens (Dawn) of Callahan; mother Hazel Richard of Sanderson; brothers John Paul Mann of Sanderson; William Richard of Glen St. Mary and Douglas Funston Mann; sisters Margaret Sallie (Jean) of Sanderson and Mary Waters (Roger) of Middleburg; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
