County Manager C.J. Thompson received word from the county attorney last week that Oldcastle Southern Group, the company behind a sand mining plan turned away by county commissioners last July, has withdrawn from mediation proceedings that began last fall.
But the company, which hasn’t responded to a request for comment, may have abandoned altogether its effort to overturn the county’s denial, said county commissioner Adam Giddens Tuesday. He said county officials have known for some time about a potential legal hurdle for Oldcastle should the company seek to sue the county to get its project off the ground.

After learning that the county owed $1.2 million to the school district due to a series of mistakes in the tax collector’s office, county commissioners were told last week to prepare for another jolt to the budget — this time from the City of Macclenny.
