Hogs, tools are stolen from farm

Eight young hogs were among the property stolen from a farm residence west of Glen St. Mary between July 7-17.

Charlie (Bud) Davis told Deputy Jeremiah Johnson he returned to his home on Smokey Rd. near the interstate overpass to find the livestock gone, along with an inventory of tools, a chain saw and other implements. He valued the animals at $700 and the other property taken from sheds at $1115.

Meth cook handed 20 months prison



A Glen St. Mary man pleaded no contest in circuit court on July 16 to operating a meth lab off Clete Harvey Rd. and drew a 20-month prison term.

Daniel Booth, 29, entered the pleas to manufacturing meth, possession with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to bring contraband into county jail. The state dropped counts of having ingredients for meth, possessing paraphernalia for storage and a second contraband count.

Board signaling for cuts to sheriff budget

During a brief review of constitutional officer budgets during the county commission’s workshop last week, board members mainly took aim at the sheriff’s budget, which has grown from $4.1 million in 2003-04 to $8,050,258 in the current year.

Brian Bishop, the sheriff’s administrative chief, said health insurance rates “were pretty brutal this time,” particularly for special risk employees, and that the department will be required to make increased contributions to employee retirement plans.

Fighting case dismissed; Judge affirms ‘stand your ground’

A judge earlier this week dismissed a criminal case against a Macclenny woman on the basis of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” statute.

Heather McDonald of Macclenny had been charged with disorderly conduct shortly after a fight last December at Winn-Dixie also involving Lisa Meister, 36, of Macclenny.
