The gap in paving on Fred Harvey Rd. just west of Cow Pen Rd.

Residents along Cow Pen Road waited years for the county to pave their central county roadway, which the county finished last year.

But there’s a side road off Cow Pen, Fred Harvey Road, where the pavement ends and a section of dirt right-of-way continues west for about seven-tenths of a mile before the paved section of Fred Harvey begins and connects with CR 127.

One reader opined recently on The Press Facebook wall that the paving gap on Fred Harvey was an example of wasteful spending by county government and wondered how it got  there in the first place.

Health insurance costs are ballooning

The cost of health insurance for Baker County employees is going up. Exactly how much, and how it could affect benefits, will be decided in the coming weeks.

The particulars will be determined by the county’s insurance committee, which includes the county manager and employees, working with the county’s insurance consultant Owen & Associates.

Updated: Brown formally resigns as counsel

The county’s long-time attorney Terry Brown quit practicing law late last month, admitting to the Florida Bar that mental impairments brought on by mini-strokes have rendered him incapable of doing so.

The Press first reported in early July that the attorney who has represented the county commission for a quarter-century intended to step down.
