Arrest for DUI, hit and run

A Macclenny woman faces multiple charges after a hit and run accident during the post-midnight hour February 19 at the intersection of South 6th and Jonathan streets.

The woman whose Chevrolet was struck by a 2000 Honda SUV driven by Wendy Delgross, 46, called police as she followed the vehicle east from Macclenny on US 90 near the Walmart Distribution Center.

Krista Newmans, 25, of Macclenny told Deputy Matt Riegel she was stopped at the intersection about 12:30 when the Honda sideswiped the left rear of her vehicle while making a turn onto Jonathan. She turned around and followed it after it failed to stop.

The deputy said he confronted Ms. Delgross parked off the roadway in a wooded area and noted she appeared to be under the influence with slurred speech and constricted pupils. She failed field sobriety testing outside county jail, and at one point Deputy Riegel said she raised her hand and said to him, “I want to hit you so bad.”

The officer also said Ms. Delgross’ demeanor turned belligerent on the way to jail and again after arrival. A breathalyzer test did not indicate alcohol intoxication, and she eventually consented to a urine test for the presence of drugs.

She was booked for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving on a license with three suspensions and assault on an officer.
