To end a somewhat lively school board meeting last week that broke into a happy birthday song at one point, officials railed against the state’s school grading formula and pledged to do whatever it takes to boost marks next year.

The Baker County School Board took another step toward delivering county homeowners a small tax cut last week by adopting the tentative millage rate and budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

The number of F-rated schools in Florida more than doubled this year while the number of A-rated schools fell by 39 percent, according to preliminary school grades released last week by the state.
Baker County schools didn’t fare any better with the tougher standards, which were rolled out to better prepare students for the move to national ”Common Core” standards in 2014-15.
