The smell of a wood burning fire cooking down gallons of freshly-pressed cane juice will greet visitors at the historic Chesser Island Homestead on Saturday, November 23rd during a traditional sugar cane boil from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. (more…)

Our advertising deadline for Thanksgiving week’s edition will be Friday, November 22. The newspaper will be printed a day earlier to accommodate our mail subscribers, so they will receive the Black Friday shopping inserts by Wednesday.
Turkey shoots are scheduled for November 22 and 23 behind the Baker County Health Department on Lowder St. in Macclenny. The events start at 4 pm on Friday and 9 am on Saturday.
Proceeds to go the Baker County EMS (emergency medical services) department and they will be matched up to $2500 by the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benefit society.
The money will be spent on equipment for the rescue units.

1st Annual Inaugural Jacksonville Celtic Festival Is Largest Event Of Its Kind For Northeast Florida
The upbeat music, lively dancing, rugged Highland games, and cuisine of the colorful Celtic culture will be offered at the Jacksonville Celtic Festival, the largest event of its kind ever planned for Northeast Florida. The free event will be held from noon-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at the oceanfront SeaWalk Pavilion, 75 1st St. N., Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
