Macclenny lauds teen for saving grandmother

It’s not every day that the Macclenny City Commission gives official recognition to a hero, much less two in one night.
A teenage boy and a city firefighter both received awards during the monthly commission meeting on April 8 for life-saving actions in separate incidents in the city recently.
Dalton Alexander, 15, was credited with saving his grandmother’s life and possibly the lives of his parents and his 13-year-old sister in a house fire at 230 W. Michigan Ave. on the morning of March 23.
Fire Chief Buddy Dugger said the boy displayed “heroic actions” after he heard a noise coming from his grandmother’s room a few minutes after 7 am and went to see if she was alright. Read More »

Tracey adult rehab bid rejected

Camp Tracey, a former church-run home and counseling center for troubled adolescents pastor-mccormick_commissionin the Cuyler area north of Glen St. Mary, will not be allowed to reopen as a residential treatment facility to help adult men kick their alcohol, drug and other addictions.
County commissioners unanimously killed the proposal after listening to more than a dozen people speak for and against it during a crowded public hearing that lasted more than 90 minutes the evening of April 15 at the county administration building in Macclenny.
“This is in my district and I consider this spot zoning in a largely residential area,” said Commissioner Adam Giddens. “It’s not compatible with the (county’s) comprehensive plan.” Read More »

I’ve been married for almost 33 years, so you would think that I wouldn’t be surprised by very much. But this is an actual conversation from the Gerard household last night.
“Wake up,” my wife says as she nudges me.
“Are you awake?”

“It’s dark,” she answers.
