Gingerbread house builders at Westside Elementary

Students at Westside Elementary School were joined in the cafeteria by parents and teachers the afternoon of December 18 in crafting miniature houses of gingerbread, candy, frosting, pretzels, cereal and other tasty materials to bring home with them.

Cats wrestlers place eighth at Sandalwood Invitational

The Wildcat wrestling team turned in a good showing at the Sandalwood Invitational on December 13 and 14. Three of the wrestlers medaled and the Cats finished eighth in the 16-team field.

Coach Adam Brunner had hoped for a stronger finish for the Cats but was happy  with the second place showing by Lenny Carter.

“Lenny Carter displayed a great effort against the team who won the tournament, Fletcher High School,” said Brunner. “He battled with Fletcher until the last minute of the last round, but ended up coming just a little short in points.”

Letter: Ditch health insurance benefits

Dear Editor:

I read with interest Commissioner James Croft’s proposal to save money by eliminating what commissioners get for travel and cell phones, saving about $9000 annually.

I don’t have a problem with them getting this because it is used to do their jobs effectively.

However, I agree with Commissioner Gordon Crews that more than $9000 a year can be saved by eliminating health insurance benefits. I don’t know what the county pays for it, but am willing to bet it’s over $1000 a month.

Faye McCollum dies December 19

Sylvia Faye McCollum of Macclenny died on Wednesday, December 19, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her garden, fishing and found a sense of peace in taking care of her family and friends. She was the wife of the late Calvin Grant “Mac” McCollum and was preceded in death by parents Herbert and Eva Mae Crews Harris and her sister Eloise Harris Crews. She was born in Jacksonville and resided in Macclenny all of her life.

Mrs. McCollum is survived by sons Randy Long, Ronnie (Jill) Long and Ricky Long, all of Baker County; step-son Char (Debbie) McCollum of Jacksonville; grandchildren Dawson Allen Long, Jordan Zoe Long and Lacey Lee King; sister Linda (Jim) Pifer and brother Herbert (Sherry) Harris Jr., both of Glen St. Mary; nieces and nephews and her pet companion Lizzie.

The funeral service was held at 3 pm Saturday, December 22 at Sanderson Congregational Holiness Church with Rev. David Thomas officiating, assisted by Rev. Justin Griffis. Interment was at South Prong Cemetery, Sanderson. Guerry Funeral Home of Macclenny was in charge of arrangements.
