Cats fall to St. Augustine 20-6

The Wildcats dropped their season opener 20-6 to the visiting St. Augustine Yellow Jackets in a hard-fought game.

Baker County’s offense rolled early as quarterback Jacob Carter connected with wide receiver Reggie Givens on a 22-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to put the team up 6-0. The offense struggled to move the ball for the majority of the remainder of the game.

The Yellow Jackets responded with a punishing ground game as they scored on a 1- and 34-yard touchdown runs to take a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cats had a chance to stay in the game early in the second quarter. Wide receiver Seth Paige moved the ball to St. Augustine’s 5-yard line, but he suffered a shoulder injury on the play and missed the rest of the game. The offense became stagnant in his absence and couldn’t capitalize on the field position after Carter missed a field goal.

St. Augustine added two field goals in the second and fourth quarters to pull away with the lead.

The Cats will try to move to .500 September 5 when they travel to Bradford County.
