US 90 Daytime lane closures next Friday (April 19) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between the Columbia County line and Sanderson to take roadway samples.
Vera Mae Crews, 67, of Glen St. Mary died on Friday, March 29, 2013. Mrs. Crews enjoyed singing, being with her grandchildren and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by husband Cecil Crews; sons Elton (Katie) Rhoden of Sanderson and Ed (Lisa) Johns of Macclenny; sisters Nadine Dobson, Sylvia (Robert) Perdue, Margaret (Wendell) Kirkland, Virginia (Bobby) Thrift, all of Macclenny and Robin (Donnie) Mann of Sanderson; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. Crews was held 11 am Wednesday, April 3 at the Glen Friendship Tabernacle in Glen St. Mary with Pastor Albert Starling officiating. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Macclenny. Forbes Funeral Home of Macclenny was in charge of arrangements.
The Wildcat baseball team over the weekend bounced back from a blistering loss on March 25 to Clay County, winning the Fernandina Beach Diamond Classic by sweeping three games.
The win brings the Cats’ record to 16-2 overall.
It was a relief for the Cats after a rough loss at home to the Blue Devils. BCHS was knocked dizzy by a quick seven runs in the first inning and never recovered as Clay racked up an 18-8 win.
BCHS tried to keep it close early and closed the gap to 7-4. But Clay scored five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to seal the victory, only the second loss of the season for Fred Matricardi’s Cats.
At Fernandina, Ethan Wilkerson was MVP of the tournament and hit .500 through three games.
The Cats got things started with a 4-0 romp over Tatnell Square Academy of Macon, GA. The game was scoreless through seven innings. Jared Crews had a strong outing on the mound, throwing 6 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.
Appalled doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt after reading the article about Coach Sulkowski using the school district credit card for dinner at Whitey’s Fish Camp. The use of a school district vehicle for him to go to a weightlifting meet in addition to the school bus carrying the team isn’t as bad, but still annoys me. The alcohol purchase is more or less icing on the proverbial cake of wasted tax payer dollars.
I’m not picking on Coach Sulkowski as I can’t believe it’s a problem restricted to just the football coach. I’m sure coaches in other sports have the same freedoms, at least the ones that bring in the most money. The poor tennis, swim and track coaches are second tier. No free dinners at Whitey’s for you guys.
The discussion from the administration on down about lack of funds for the classrooms is a constant hum these days. I’ve been to Whitey’s and besides the fact it’s a heck of a drive from anywhere, it’s not cheap. So once you factor in dinner for three, drinks and a district vehicle you could easily be looking at over $150.
