Jacksonville pedestrian dies after being struck by Macclenny driver on US 90

A Macclenny driver will not be charged in the death of  Jacksonville pedestrian struck on US 90 in Nassau County early the morning of February 25.

Kristian D. Bennett, 25, was traveling east and unable to avoid Elizabeth Chessman, 37, of Jacksonville, who was in the roadway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, possibly due to low-light conditions and the victim’s dark clothing.

The collision occurred about 5:40 am about a mile west of CR 121, often referred to as River Road, near Baldwin.

FHP said Ms. Bennett initially though she struck a deer with the right front of her 1988 Chevy 1500, which sustained an estimated $8000 in damage, and returned to the scene.

When she realized the victim was a person, she called authorities.

The highway was closed until about 9:30 am.
