Since this is probably the first time many of us are meeting, please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Jon Shumake, and I will be covering sports for The Baker County Press beginning in July.
I was born and raised on Jacksonville’s Westside and I have called Whitehouse my home for my entire life. I attended Baldwin Middle-Senior High School for most my middle and high school career, and graduated in 2008.
Hunter Hanks proved to be one of the most versatile players in Coach Fred Matricardi’s arsenal this season. The pitcher and infielder was one of the team leaders and helped lead the Cat baseball team to a 21-6 record.
Wildcat baseball fans aren’t the only ones who appreciated what Hanks did on the mound, on the field and with a bat in his hands. He was named the Florida Times-Union’s Player of the Year.
Baker County Wildcat softball standout Kylie Holton won double awards this week.
The senior catcher was named All State by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) and was also the first team Florida Times-Union’s All Area catcher.
Holton has tremendous potential and was a force to be reckoned with both on offense and defense.
