Local jobless rate climbs again, housing sales are oscillating

2013 Baker County unemployment rates.

After dipping in the spring, the local unemployment rate rose slightly in June to 6.9 percent, its highest level since December, 2012.

Experts like University of North Florida economist Paul Mason say that’s partly due to students looking for work during the summer but few of them finding it, according to a recent report from The Florida Times-Union.

A Macclenny man had to be subdued with pepper spray and leg restraints after he was arrested the afternoon of July 18 at his Blair St. residence on a drunk driving warrant from Duval County.

Clerk helps nab alleged gas thief

An alert employee at Murphy Oil on SR 228 South tipped off a county deputy to the whereabouts of a Live Oak man suspected of stealing $383 worth of fuel on four occasions between July 11-19.

The employee called police the afternoon of July 20 when she spotted a suspect later identified as Joseph Oliva, 43, exit a blue Ford truck and enter nearby Walmart.
