BCHS junior wins team roping championship

“My heroes have always been cowboys, and they still are, it seems.”

Willie Nelson’s words certainly echo in the ears of Bradon Callen. The BCHS junior, is a cowboy himself, and a good one at that. He recently walked away with a new saddle and a state title in team roping at the Florida High School Rodeo Championships.

Callen finished with 104 points for a 15th place in the All-Around but with teammate Colton Mathews of Lakeland, he took home the team roping championship and moves on to Youth Nationals in Shawnee, Oklahoma and High School Nationals in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July.

Andrea brings rain, but little else

The first named storm of the 2013 hurricane season, Tropical Storm Andrea, passed through late last week, dropping some 2 inches of rainfall and prompting the county to declare a state of emergency on Thursday.

The worst of the rain and wind cleared out by the weekend. BCSO emergency management director Lt. Adam Faircloth described the emergency declaration as a precautionary step and the first required to receive recovery assistance from federal authorities.

No roads were closed due to the rain, but area ditches were full.  The elevation of the St. Mary’s River rose steadily and reached 7.1 feet early Saturday before receding. The county was under a tornado warning until 10 pm Thursday, but none were reported. The emergency declaration ended Saturday.
