Arrest for pilfering artifacts

Allen C. HydeA Macclenny man was among 13 suspects arrested across the state and in Georgia last week for stealing valuable artifacts from state lands and attempting to sell them online and at trade shows during the last two years.

Undercover officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) infiltrated a group of men accused of digging or dredging on state property to find the artifacts, some priced at $100,000. Most of the suspects were arrested at their homes the morning of February 27, including Allen Charles Hyde at 53 W. Macclenny Ave.

Mr. Hyde, 49, faces 50 felony counts of dealing in stolen property, one misdemeanor count of theft and 51 felony counts of violating historical resources, according to FWC.

The state agency did not release details of each suspect’s specific offenses like what artifacts they took from public lands or the exact locations of the alleged thefts.

Bob Curtner, 68, funeral March 4th

Robert “Bob” Curtner, 68, of Glen St. Mary died on February 28, 2013 at his residence with family by his side. He was born in Ripley County, Missouri on October 24, 1944 to the late Elsie Martha Ray Curtner. Bob was raised in Missouri and was a resident of Baker County for the past 30 years after moving from Jacksonville. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family, and traveling with his sister. Bob loved his family, especially his daughter and grandson. He was preceded in death by his mother and sisters Katherine Curtner and Earleen Hendrickson.

Clara Davis, 75, was a retired nurse

Clara Elouise Davis, 75, of Glen St. Mary died on Friday March 1, 2013 at her residence with family by her side. She was born in Moniac, Georgia on October 3, 1937 to the late Allen Rhoden and Clara Reynolds Rhoden. Elouise was raised in Baker County and graduated from Baker County High School in 1955. She married her husband of 56 years on February 9, 1957. She graduated from Licensed Vocational Nursing School in Orange, TX in 1968 and from Union University in Jackson, TN with an associate degree in nursing in 1973.

Mrs. Davis was an outstanding and dedicated registered nurse who advanced to the position of head nurse of the coronary care unit at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, VA in 1970’s. She was also head nurse of the cardiac surgery unit at St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. Elouise retired from her formal nursing career in 1999 from  the post-anesthesia care unit at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Mr. Denison, 92, was minister here

Perryman H. Denison, 92, died in Jacksonville on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. He was born in the Midway community of Union County to the late James Oscar and Ethel Denison on February 3, 1921.

He was a minister for Churches of Christ during most of his working life, serving the Moultrie, Georgia church and Florida churches in Macclenny, Live Oak, Lake City, Cocoa and Jacksonville. He also became a real estate professional later in life, owning and operating a brokerage and property management company in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood. He continued to serve his home congregation and others with his preaching, teaching, counseling and leadership during the time of his business career and on into his retirement.
