Lady Cats bring home trophy from Keystone Heights

The Lady Wildcat volleyball team battled their way from the losers bracket to win the Keystone Heights Invitational this past weekend. Candace Clack and Brooke Roberts also made the All-Tournament team.

The Cats struggled on Friday night, losing to 7A Westport 23-25 and 20-25. But on Saturday, they came out ready to play, defeating Yulee in three games — 23-25, 25-21  and 15-10 — with Callie Wheeler and Clack posting five kills each. Kayla Holland and freshman Ashton Alford had six digs.

The Cats then faced Clay County, defeating the Blue Devils 25-23 and 25-14. Wheeler led the offense with five kills and Brooke Roberts had an outstanding defensive effort with nine digs.

The Cats faced a big challenge in the tournament semi-final with a rematch against unbeaten Westport. The Cats defeated them in three games, 19-25, 25-19 and 15-13. Kayla Holland turned in an outstanding match with ten kills and ten digs. Taylor Hancock had 23 assists and Callie Wheeler had eight kills and seven digs.

Graveside rites for Mrs. Motherwell

Rosemary Motherwell, 68, of Sanderson died on Tuesday, October 16 at the Acosta-Rua Center for Caring in Jacksonville after an extended illness. She was a native of Memphis, TN and resided in Green Cove Springs before moving to Sanderson in 1994. Mrs. Motherwell was a manager at several McDonald’s restaurants until her retirement after 29 years of service. She was a poll worker at the Baxter precinct and enjoyed reading and cleaning houses, both her own and those of family.

She was the widow of John Arthur Motherwell and is survived by daughter Roseanne (Chuck) Austin of Green Cove Springs; son Robert (Brenda) Allen of St. Augustine; grandchildren Amada Allen and Emily Allen; siblings Bobbie, Sue and Johnny; close friend Jessie Harvey.

Bernice Green, 86, of Macclenny dies

Bernice Milton Green, 86, of Macclenny died on October 5, 2012 at Macclenny Nursing and Rehab with family by her side. She was born in Baker County on November 28, 1925 to the late Verge Dupont Walker and Myrtie Taylor Walker Rowe. Bernice was a lifelong resident of Baker County and the longest consistent member of First Baptist Church of Macclenny where she taught Sunday school for 26 years. She was very active in the “Golden Circle” Sunday school class for 12 years and at the time of her death was a member of “The Redeemer” Sunday school class.

Mrs. Green graduated from Macclenny High School in 1943 as valedictorian. She was the owner and operator of Modern Beauty Salon for 50 years. She was an avid bowler and bowled with The Lady Bugs league of Jacksonville for many years. Bernice enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping in the Smoky Mountains. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Shannon Ray Green, Jr.; sons-in-law Sherrel Williams and Danny Lamb; brother Vernon Walker; step-sisters Carolyn Jones and Myrna Davis.

William Granger dies October 16th

William S. Granger Jr. died on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. He was born on September 12, 1939 in Birmingham, AL. He retired from Jacksonville Fire and Rescue as a captain after 32 years and had many acquaintances in Baker County. He was a member of River Road Baptist Church in Hilliard. Mr. Granger was a very beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlie Faye Granger; daughters Marie Wells (Charlie) and Teresa Harnage; sons William S. Granger III (Patty) and Chris Granger (Jackie); six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
