Dorothy Copeland, 84, of Maxville dies


Dorothy Marie “Susie Q” O’Neal Copeland, 84, a lifelong resident of Maxville, died on October 13, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center after open heart surgery.

Her family was by her side. She was born in Maxville on September 17, 1928 to the late John Clayton O’Neal Sr. and Ellen Mae Padgett O’Neal. Susie Q loved life, bluegrass music, traveling to the beach and mountains, gardening and mowing grass. She was an avid Dale Earnhardt racing fan. Most of all she loved hanging out at her brother Luther O’Neal’s barn on Monday nights. She retired from North East Florida State Hospital as a nurse after 30 years of dedicated service. Susie Q was preceded in death by her loving husband of 36 years, Robert Copeland and  brothers Luther and Walter O’Neal.

She is survived by her loving daughters Darlene (Alex) Parker and Shirley (Carlis) Manning, both of Maxville; brothers John Clayton O’Neal Jr. of Fernandina, Eugene O’Neal and John Frank O’Neal, both of Maxville;  grandchildren Nicole Barlanti, Heather Starling, Gerald Starling, Candace Carter, Ciara Manning, and Cheyenne Manning; great-grandchildren Haylei Barlanti, Blake Carter, Cali Carter, Raylen Maloy, Noah, Christopher, Hunter and Gerald Wyman Starling.

The funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 17 at 11 am at V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Services with Pastor David Ragan and Larry O’Neal officiating. Interment followed  at Brandy Branch Cemetery in Bryceville.
