James Carroll Hickson, 81, of White Springs, Fla. died August 3, 2012 at Still Waters West in Lake City. He was born June 28, 1931 in Black Joe, Kentucky to the late Vina Boles Hickson and Calvin C. Hickson and served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 until his discharge in 1963. He was employed by the State of Florida Department of Agriculture in Baker County, where he lived for over 30 years until his retirement in 1991. He and his wife Marie then moved to White Springs and were active in the community and the First Baptist Church, where he served as usher chairman.They enjoyed traveling and spending time at their mountain cabin in the Smokies near Murphy, N.C. Mr. Hickson was known for his beautiful handmade baskets and he taught basket weaving and punch art design at the Stephen Foster State Folk Festival.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marie in 2007; brothers James Paul, Hubert, Marvin and Udell; sisters Vivian Hickson, Irene Stokes and Cassi Pressley. Survivors include daughters Cyrstal Coleman (Craig) of Kearney, Mo. and Brenda Owens (Steve) of North Catasauqua, Pa; son James C. Hickson II of Pennsylvania; stepchildren Shirley Brannan (Robert) of Macclenny, Martha Morgan (J.M.), Buddy Dees (Anne) and James Dees (Juanita), all of White Springs; special niece Ann Hickson Estes of Summerville, S.C.; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service was conducted at 11 am on August 7 at Riverside Cemetery in White Springs with Rev. Ron Thompson, pastor of Pine Grove Baptist Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Still Waters, 507 N.W. Hall of Fame Drive, Lake City, FL 32055. Guerry Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.
