Cecil M. Hayes, 85, of Macclenny died August 15, 2012 at the Earl B. Hadlow Center in Jacksonville. He was born in Atlanta on April 26, 1927. Mr. Hayes was a U.S. Army veteran and worked at the former Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville as an assistant administrator for many years, but was best known as a pastor at several Congregational Holiness Churches in Florida and Atlanta. He was also a former pastor of the Christian Fellowship Temple in Macclenny and later retired from pastoring United Methodist churches in the Atlanta and Western North Carolina areas.Rev. Hayes graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor of business administration degree, from Emory University with a master of divinity degree, Luther Rice Seminary with a master of theology degree, and American Divinity School with a doctor of divinity degree. He was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Gaylia Giddens Hayes; children Tera Hayes (Bonnie), Celia Cox (Steve), Gid Giddens (Linda), Darrell Giddens (Martha), Roxanne Wilson (Charlie), Connie Bolling (Butch), and Roxy Giddens; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held 11 am on Saturday, August 18, at the First Assembly of God in Macclenny and interment followed in Manntown Cemetery, Glen St. Mary. Reverend Joshua Potts officiated. Giddens-Reed Funeral Home of Baldwin was in charge of arrangements.
