Mr. Harper, 76, of Callahan dies

Raymond Edward Harper, 76, of Callahan died unexpectedly April 18, 2011. He was born in Anniston, Alabama, served in the Air Force and worked as a civilian instructor in air traffic control. He subsequently worked as an air traffic controller and retired after 30 years.

Mr. Harper graduated from Anniston High School and from Jones Business College in 1973 with a bachelor of science degree. He was an active member of the Westside Democrat Club, and was known as a true friend to those that knew him, always there to lend a helping hand, no matter the time of day or night.

He was known as the rock of his entire family — words cannot adequately express the loss and grief that is felt by his passing. His generosity, quick wit, caring attitude and compassion will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by son Ronald Harper and granddaughter Courtney Harper Turner.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Beverly; daughter Robin (John) Howell of Macclenny; daughter-in-law Jean Harper Eger; grandchildren Candice Harper, Ryan (Rachel) Harper; and Magan Howell; sister Evelyn Harper Smith; brother Jerry (Christine) Harper; sisters-in-law Paula Derrick, Reta Joffer and Melissa Butler; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held May 6 at 2:00 pm, at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity or to the American Heart Association. The family will receive friends at his home after the service. Nassau Funeral Home of Callahan was in charge of arrangements.
